Volumetric Video Capability?

Does Zappar Studio have the capability to incorporate volumetric video? We just received a grant from Intel and are building an Immersive Learning Studio with Evercoast. We’ll be able to create volumetric videos and now we are exploring how we can turn them into AR experiences.

Hi Johnny,

Congratulations on the grant!

Right now we don’t have support for volumetric video in ZapWorks Studio, though it is something we’re keen to look at in future. We’ve done some work on our own volumetric runtime format that can support iOS, Android and Web deployments but it’s still pretty early-stage work and not something we have a target date for yet.

There isn’t (as far as I know) an open standard for streamable volumetric video data, and capture is still expensive. So it’s challenging to add general support to Studio as there’s a range of proprietary formats from different capture companies and a limited amount of generally-available content to test with.

So our likely route is to use our own runtime delivery format and build converters for specific capture formats as and when they are required for specific projects. We’d be happy to investigate the volumetric video format that you’re using to see if we could integrate that support into Studio, but we would look to unlock some budget for that integration from the project budget to do that work. Reach out to us over email if you’d be interested in exploring that option.

Outside of ZapWorks Studio, you could look into our Universal AR SDKs for engines such as Unity or three.js. Those engines will likely have plugins for volumetric video playback from the various volumetric capture companies.

Hope that helps, and have a great Christmas!

Hi @simon and @marks,
Thanks for your reply. We are going to be working with The Gronstedt Group to develop our experiences. If/when you are able to incorporate volumetric videos into Zappar, please let us know- we’d love to try that out.

Kindly,
Johnny
